Teaching kids to fish is an important way to make sure that fishing and conservation is passed down to the next generation. As long as kids have a positive experience, they will continue to love it as they grow older. Show them a good time, and kids will put the outdoors on top of their list of preferred activities. Each year in May we work with area 4th grade classes and special needs classes in Itasca county from Black Duck, Coleraine, Grand Rapids, and Deer River to participate in a fishing day. Let’s Go fishing Itasca works with Itasca Water Legacy Partnership to participate in the Itasca county 5th Grade water summit where quality of water in area lake is tested.
Let’s Go Fishing Itasca is a nonprofit organization run 100% by local volunteers they are affiliated with Let’s Go Fishing, inc a statewide organization with 20 LGF affiliates throughout Minnesota and 2 in Wisconsin.
Let’s Go Fishing Itasca was formed in the fall of 2007 thanks to donations and grants were able to raise monies to purchase their first pontoon in the spring of 2008 and began to offer this program to our seniors, handicapped, veterans, and youth at no charge. The Mission of Let’s Go Fishing Itasca is to continue to serve older adults, youth, veterans, and disabled throughout Itasca county. Let’s Go Fishing has always had at its core the desire to serve older adults in our community. Whether they are part of a housing community or individuals still living in their own residences, older adults benefit greatly from joining with others and taking a morning or afternoon trip on the Let’s Go Fishing pontoon. Let’s Go Fishing has always had at its core the desire to serve older adults in our community. We have had families taking out senior family members. A granddaughter who wanted to take grandpa fishing. Seniors doing what they remember doing and thought they would never be able to do it again.
Thanks to generous donors from area business’s, foundations, and special events LGF has been able to fund this organization. Thanks to the support of Cohasset and Grand Rapids by modifying their piers with a door wheel chairs have ease of getting on and off the pontoon.
We impact thousands of individuals each year and with the implementation of new programs we now serve Hospice patients (regardless of age), seniors, youth, veterans, and the disabled in Itasca county. This service is provided to the participants at no charge. Let’s Go Fishing is committed to making our fishing and boating trips are accessible to all. We have specially modified pontoon boats that are able to accommodate wheelchairs. In order to provide stability, our pontoon has a third tube in the center of the boat.
A strong volunteer base is the core strength of LGF. Volunteers contribute time and expertise to help create memories for program participants. All LGF volunteers are well-trained individuals who have a passion for fishing and boating and a caring heart for the people they serve. They have a desire to share the outdoor experience with others and to create a community that cares for all its citizens. We believe in the power of volunteerism to positively impact the lives of others and transform communities. Giving back to others serves our guests and enriches the lives of those sharing their skills, experience and time. Throughout our communities there are hundreds of good-hearted people taking older adults on special outdoor recreational activities, whether it be bird watching, boat rides, or fishing we support any ongoing activity that enhance the lives of seniors.
